Corporate bans on accessing personal Web mail accounts from the office are often misguided. IT organizations should re-evaluate Web mail policy to ensure it remains appropriate. The three most-common justifications for blocking Web mail don't always outweigh the business benefits of employee morale. Enterprises should have a well-considered Web mail policy and not a hasty reaction to productivity concerns or legacy security concerns. Regulatory and intellectual property leakage issues provide the strongest cases for blocking but may not apply to all employees.
