As organizations plan large-scale deployment technologies, such as identity management, identity federation, Web services and digital rights management, they will investigate the possible roles public key infrastructures and public key operations architecture can play to enhance trust. Public key cryptography is a potentially powerful technology, with the ability to benefit organizations by providing the underlying capabilities needed to support a strong binding to identity, the management of end-user cryptographic keys and certificates, support for digital signatures, and the enabling of secure authenticated e-mail between trusted parties. While successful deployments exist, many operating initiatives must still be considered immature because they have yet to demonstrate real value.
