A virtual local-area network is an acceptable component of an Internet demilitarized zone, but VLANs alone do not create a true DMZ. Firewalling and basic security best practices are necessary elements of VLAN-based Internet DMZs. The success of server virtualization has led many enterprises to expand network virtualization deployments - achieved via virtual local-area networks, or VLANs. While they provide logical network separation, VLANs alone do not provide the security policy enforcement required to create separate security zones between trusted and untrusted networks.
