In the past, RISC-based servers delivered performance and memory advantages that made them the workhorses of corporate computing. And even though the systems used expensive, proprietary components and were expensive to operate, many organizations ran their critical business applications - including database, ERP, CRM, DNS server, and others - on RISC systems. As a result, fewer new servers are needed to do the jobs of older servers. For example, when Principled Technologies migrated an Oracle database application from a Sun Fire V440 with four Sun Ultra Sparc IIIi processors to a Dell PowerEdge R900 with four Intel Xeon E7450 processors, the Dell system ran over 13 times faster than the older system.
