A serious threat is emerging on the Internet where malicious Web sites exploit browser vulnerabilities to install malicious software. Traditional honeypots are typically server-side, which passively draw attacks from malicious clients. This paper describes the Strider HoneyMonkey Exploit Detection System, which uses client-side honeypots to hunt for potentially malicious Web sites actively. Its HoneyMonkey system detects unauthorized persistent-state changes resulting from successful vulnerability exploit; therefore, it can detect both known and zero-day exploits.
