More and more applications today are driven not only by individual users and application specific data, but by content created by different groups within the organization. Today's databases - object, relational or hierarchical - lack the necessary core features, such as versioning and rich media interactions, required to handle the content. To provide such content centric functionality, many products under a broad umbrella of content management systems (CMS) have emerged during the last few years. CMS products store the content in a repository that provides a façade or extension layer on top of data stores to enable creation and management of content. Content Repositories can come in an unstructured format like a Wiki or in a proprietary structured format like Documentum or Vignette.
