With IT staffs laying out plans for implementing virtual servers, massive storage arrays, and disaster recovery sites, it is extremely important and useful to link these sites to a truly reliable, active-active multiple redundant, high-speed Layer 2 Ethernet network. In addition, a truly "Distributed switching" system that can act and be managed like a single, large Ethernet switch only adds to the appeal. Such a switching system does not require Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) with its inherent bandwidth limitations, and eliminates inefficient VLAN routing (where one location "Owns" the VLAN) that wastes large amounts of bandwidth.
