IT has always helped enterprises reduce costs through more efficient processes, but when efficiency is viewed through a sustainability lens, the results can be startling. UPS uses "package-flow" software to map out its most efficient delivery routes. From drastically limiting left-hand turns, which waste energy as drivers sit idle, UPS estimates it shaved nearly 30 million miles off its delivery routes, saved 3 million gallons of gas and reduced CO2 emissions by 32,000 metric tons.
