The university studies the ability of sub-resolution optical structures to store data. It begins the study with surface relief structures. Because it is probing features whose sizes are much smaller than the wavelength of the readout light, retrieval of data from these structures requires near-field detection. For now they are considering a ROM, in which the sub-resolution features are realized via etching, molding, or stamping. The grooves as indicated in the figure are made of glass with a refractive index of 1.5; the polymer fill-in has a refractive index of 1.2, the silicon detectors have an index of 3.48.
