Goal oriented methods provide software engineers with the means of modeling high-level systemic goals, for proposing and evaluating architectural solutions, and finally for detecting and resolving conflicts that occur. This paper describes a new technique that enables design patterns to be applied within a goal-oriented framework as potential design solutions. These softgoal design patterns are then contextualized by the developer according to the constraints and context of the specific problem, and are used to automatically generate UML class diagrams. This approach provides the potential for longer-term fully automated traceability between goal and design models.
