KPN, the market leader in major segments of the Dutch telecoms industry, operates a fixed telephony network in the Netherlands and mobile services in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. KPN wanted to reduce the costs and increase the productivity of KANVAS, its cable network connection address registration system, because KPN's legacy mainframe was reaching the end of its life. In 2002, working with Unisys, Microsoft, and system integrator Atos Origin, KPN migrated to 16-way and 32-way Intel-based Unisys ES7000 enterprise servers. The servers run Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000, part of Microsoft Windows Server integrated server software. The implementation has cut operating costs by two-thirds and boosted processing speeds by 70 per cent.
