The purpose of this paper is to disseminate the process and experiences of a business school developing a web-based information system named the "ExtraNet" - for managing course assessment, recording results, and communicating information to staff, students and external agencies. Using an evaluative methodology, the development process is reviewed and reveals that real-life system development does not follow a clearly defined model but instead is borne from change catalysts such as growth, increased external agency compliance pressures and customer expectations. Finally, this paper provides insight into the complex process of systems development, which may assist other higher education providers in achieving successful outcomes in similar projects.
