The University of Plymouth understands the power of IT to support learning and attracts an increasing number of students with its mixture of high quality teaching backed by leading-edge computer technology. In 2007, over 20,000 students took part in higher education courses delivered by the university's 3,000 staff. This case study showcases the University's challenges and the solutions they implemented. The university looks for solutions that help people work more efficiently while also protecting the environment. Under an existing system, IT personnel needed to update the university's computers regularly with new software and security patches, which meant computers were left running overnight to receive essential updates, with up to 5,000 machines operating 24 hours a day, five days a week. This meant that finding a more efficient approach to desktop management became a priority in order to help reduce their carbon footprint With a combination of Intel? vPro? technology and energy-efficient Intel? Core? 2 Duo processors, desktops used 40 per cent less power and security updates were also managed whether the computer was left on or off. The end result - improved asset management is definitely feasible.
