Future core networks will provide connectivity services using resilient optical connections, often protected by Dedicated Path Protection (DPP) or Shared-Backup Path Protection (SBPP). Connection survivability requirements are generally specified in Service Level Agreements (SLAs) along with revenue and penalty, due when the requirements are not met. Several studies have evaluated the survivability requirements of path protected connections in terms of availability, which is the probability that the system is found in the operating state during the system lifetime. However, since SLAs are usually agreed on a yearly basis and connection outages are rare events, the availability metric alone does not provide enough information for the service provider to elaborate the SLA.
