A transformation is occurring in the area of data center switching. Multi-layer switching solutions that currently dominate enterprise and service provider datacenter networks are complex designs with a number of separate ASICs, each carrying out a specialized segment of the overall switching function. These complex switch architectures may use separate ASICs for Layer 2 processing, Layer 3 processing, Access Control List (ACL) processing, and fabric interconnect as well as for other proprietary, performance-enhancing functions. The multitude of ASICs are often spread out over several PCBs or daughter cards, and interconnected with several different buses required to transfer switching instructions in addition to the data switching fabric itself, which may be of a proprietary nature.
