One important strategic decision resulting from this is the NewIT initiative. NewIT is Aker Kvaerner's far-reaching project to consolidate and standardize the entire hardware and software infrastructure in the corporation worldwide - servers, storage, networks, operating systems, applications, and security technology. Having standardized on HP servers and storage and the Windows 2003 operating system as basic technologies, the next critical step was to choose the best security solution to protect the infrastructure. That solution turned out to be a VPN-1 Power VSX virtual security gateway.
