In MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks, restoration routing ensures that an alternate communication path will promptly be available upon failure of a network element along a primary path. This guaranteed availability is possible by setting up backup paths that protect various links and nodes in the network. It has previously been shown that two or more backup paths can share the bandwidth under certain conditions. The extent of such sharing along backup paths directly determines the effectiveness of a restoration routing algorithm. While bandwidth sharing between the backup paths has been addressed in the past, sharing of bandwidth with primary paths has not been explored previously.
