Optical-label switching offers seamless integration of data and optical networking while supporting circuit, burst, and packet switching using the optical-labels. The dynamic and agile characteristics of optical-label switching indicate its support of diverse QoS, CoS, and ToS services. Optical-label switching routers seek all-optical contention resolution in time, space, and wavelength domains. As in MPLS, optical-label switching networks separates the control plane and the data plane to facilitate protocol and format independence for the data payload. Interoperability with IP, MPLS, MPLambdaS, and other client networks can be achieved with a GMPLS extension. This paper discusses the new architecture and protocol of optical-label switching networks in light of interoperability and seamless network upgrades in the context of MPLS, MPLambdaS, and GMPLS.
