This paper describes an implementation of the Snort Network Intrusion Detection System (Snort NIDS) on the Intel IXP2400 processor. The Intel IXP2400 network processor was selected to achieve line rates in excess of 2.5 gigabits per second for the Snort NIDS, compared to less than 1 gigabit per second for traditional Snort applications. The full 2.5 gigabits per second was achieved on an OC-48 interface in this application. Line rates of 10 gigabits per second are likely achievable using the Intel IXP2800.
