Component-based architectures are currently thought of only within the context of a single application; in particular as a way of decomposing, functionally or structurally, an application into an assembly of decoupled components. As technologies and software engineering techniques have matured, these component-based systems can effectively be built today on well-defined technology bases such as EJB technologies and the J2EE APIs. When component technologies are combined with Internet based technologies like XML, the highly distributed nature of the Internet, and the standards being driven by industry groups wanting to more effectively communicate over the Internet, what results is strong momentum towards connectivity across all boundaries and the definition of new system computation models - like the one presented by the Web services initiatives.
