DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) controls an average of 2.6 million aircraft movements per year in Germany's airspace. At the outset of its pioneering use of groupware, DFS focused on specific tasks, introducing GroupWise as a mail and calendaring system in 1994 and Lotus Notes as a document management and information system in 1995. To reduce its total cost of ownership, DFS decided to migrate completely to Notes as its centralized strategic platform and to expand its use to include workflow applications, making use of the solution's standard interfaces to SAP and Oracle as well as its Unified Messaging functions. DFS completed a highly successful consolidation of its groupware servers from Windows NT onto Sun and a migration of Novell GroupWise to Lotus Notes.
