The University of Southern California (USC) is ranked among the top ten universities in research funding. USC needed to address the challenge of the explosion in computational science and data-intensive research projects. It became crucial to set up a computer infrastructure that could effectively and quickly process the huge amounts of data required in the many elite HPC basic research programs at USC. To cost effectively and efficiently face the challenge of the exponential growth of data-intensive research projects, USC turned to Sun Microsystems, Inc. to provide High Performance Computing (HPC) hardware and software solutions, and to leverage the continuity of USC's traditional infrastructure.
