Folding carton converters are starting to add a range of services to their capabilities menu called "Vendor-Managed Inventory," or VMI. Driven in part by technology - but more so by shifts in customers' ordering patterns - these converters see VMI as a means to decommoditize their product and service offerings, eliminate bidding wars, and focus on improved quality and customer service. This paper addresses the evolution of VMI, the most commonly implemented varieties, and the technology and communication requirements for successful implementation. Until relatively recently, most converters ran their businesses as job-shop environments. The order arrives, raw materials are acquired, the product is made, and it's shipped to the customer.
