Many IT executives today are looking at consolidating IT operations for several reasons. First, the rash of mergers and acquisitions dictates a rationalization of duplicate processes and infrastructure. Second, the move to streamline operations has resulted in moving from distributed systems to a centralized IT infrastructure. Third, concerns about power and cooling costs and general environmental inefficiency are leading to maximizing the efficiency of every system. This has led to the consolidation of servers and storage, using virtualization technology to allow many distinct processes and operating systems to run on the same box.
