IBM System i5 and Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.10 - Batch Performance With Unicode Vs. Non-Unicode Database

IBM System i ERP Development team in Rochester, MN tested the performance of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.10 batch jobs on IBM System i5 using 2 different databases: non-Unicode and Unicode. When the database was formatted in Unicode, the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.10 batch jobs, called Universal Batch Engine jobs (UBEs), completed faster and more efficiently. The 28 UBEs were selected and set up to be long-running and CPU-intensive. Running one at a time for over 5 hours' elapsed time, they completed an average of 2.6% faster and used 6.2% fewer CPU seconds using the Unicode database as compared to the non-Unicode database.
