The IBM Virtual Client Solution (VCS) provides an environment where traditional desktops are replaced by virtual clients. A virtual client is essentially an image of a desktop computer (a virtual desktop) stored on a central server. The image of the virtual desktop is accessed through a remote connection from a client device (for example, a thin client or another desktop PC), but otherwise behaves almost identically to a desktop PC. A virtual desktop can be assigned to a single, exclusive user, or it may belong to a pool of images available to users on a first-come, first-serve basis. Both types of images - private and pool - can be used within the same infrastructure.
