There are many ways to approach updating Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003-based HPC environments. Due to the topology and scale of the networks, Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 environments require some special considerations. WSUS provides granular control over updates and when they are deployed. It provides a central location for management of updates, and it offers the same robust architecture of Windows Update without the need for clients to connect to the Internet. Using Group Policy to publish updates is a convenient solution for .msi, .exe, and other kinds of executable files. Because Active Directory is required by Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, this update mechanism is in place by default.
