Many traditional IT shops now face a variant of the very same question posed by The Clash: to stay with RISC chips, or go with new 64-bit Intel AMD processors delivering almost equal or better computational power. The Clash's lyrics become almost prophetic when one consider all the elements in a switch from a 32-bit server to a 64-bit architecture. IT managers surveying their existing 32-bit server infrastructure may wonder whether they can reduce their data center size and complexity by using newer-generation servers, or whether moving to 64-bit server architecture will lead to an interminable process of code migration, application incompatibility, and forced hardware upgrades.
