Enterprises of various sizes and complexity recently have accelerated their interest in midrange server virtualization. They view it as an innovative technique for reducing hardware, software, environmental costs and people costs within their IT environments. Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Information Technology (IT) managers interested in virtualization would be wise, however, to first thoroughly assess their current IT environments and determine if virtualization is appropriate for their organizations. After considering the complexity, challenges and novel characteristics of such an initiative, if they decide it is viable, they will need to develop a virtualization implementation strategy that leads to a cost-effective, manageable and efficient IT infrastructure.
