Global Enterprise Manufacturing (GEM), a fast-growing international conglomerate, recently deployed a vast virtual infrastructure to support more than 12,000 users across 22 business divisions. The company's new virtual networks span diverse departments, from finance to marketing to product development, and have resulted in substantial cost savings. By employing virtualization, GEM reduced the number of servers by 77 percent, eliminating physical server sprawl while lowering maintenance costs and improving uptime. Hardware utilization increased dramatically from less than nine percent to more than 60 percent. Cost savings were substantial as well. The company realized immediate savings of $5 million with a 68 percent reduction in total IT operations, hardware and software costs.
