Java application servers perform a core function in business systems and large-scale corporate applications. The purchase decision for technology requires a thorough evaluation of factors including functionality, performance and cost. Functionality is critical to discern if the technology truly solves the business problem. Performance determines if the solution is viable when deployed for end users. Cost has a critical impact on technology budgets and ultimately helps companies decide between vendors. Companies today face a challenging decision because technology evaluation is not as simple as reviewing a checklist. Licensing cost is an excellent example of this challenge. The licensing for an open source solution is clearly more attractive then non-open source technology.
