This planning guide characterizes the performance of Microsoft Exchange 2000. The paper begins with an overview of the Exchange 2000 architecture and summarizes key performance and scalability enhancements. Next, the methodology of performance testing performed by Compaq using the MMB2 workload on selected Compaq servers and the results of that testing are presented. Considerations for optimal sizing of the system and its components are discussed, with recommendations and suggestions provided where appropriate. Included in these discussions are adjustments made to utilize new features in Exchange 2000 and other parameters in order to reflect the actual deployment environment of the user. This paper addresses some additional performance-related deployment concerns, such as monitoring of the environment and clustering.
