This paper covers the architecture and component configuration of a solution using HP OpenView Storage Mirroring (OVSM) to provide geographic disaster protection for a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 environment supporting several thousand email users. This solution offers protection of Exchange databases by mirroring host write activity to a copy of the database at a remote site, using the Ethernet network for the transport. The storage array in this design and testing is the HP StorageWorks 8000 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA), however, the storage mirroring is performed by software running on the Exchange servers (referred to as host-based mirroring); thus the selection of storage arrays encompasses any storage suitable for Exchange.
