With data storage requirements growing considerably faster than the ivy covering its distinguished Ivy League halls, Dartmouth College decided to discard its piecemeal storage approach in favor of a centrally managed storage solution based on VERITAS CommandCentral Service. Dartmouth developed a utility computing model that allows the IT department to centrally manage data storage management and retrieval as well as measure and bill for the backup services used by each of its 39 different academic departments, 18 graduate school studies programs, and three professional schools. With the storage utility computing solution in place, Dartmouth realized 100 percent ROI in a few months and is accommodating 40 percent annual growth in data volumes.
