Set along the banks of the Mississippi River in the rolling hills of St. Paul, Minnesota, the University of Minnesota (UMN) Twin Cities campus has more than 50,000 students enrolled and is one of the leading recipients of federal research awards. The University of Minnesota wanted to build a foundation for deploying and enforcing campuswide network security policies. The challenge was to improve delivery of high bandwidth and network services to departments and simplify network management. The University deployed Cisco Systems IP/MPLS routing and switching solutions, including a 10- Gigabit Ethernet backbone based on Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches; and Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series switches and Cisco Systems security solutions, including Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Firewall Services Module (FWSM).
