This paper takes a close look at the performance of the TCP/IP stack and some common file transfer protocols. Before any real life tests were performed, models were created to predict what to expect of these protocols. Afterwards, all protocols were extensively tested on real setups using some of the latest hardware available. Tuning the protocols, OS parameters and hardware often improved throughput and diminished processing power. Out of the current test results, the usability of an IP based access network between user terminals and central file cluster servers is demonstrated. All tests were performed on a scaled setup, including clients, file servers, storage controllers and disks, and the architecture was designed to be fully scalable.
