This paper presents an availability study of Storage Area Network (SAN) systems built on TCP/IP networks. The paper uses a new benchmark tool called N-SPEK (Networked-Storage Performability Evaluation Kernel-module) to measure performance dynamics under commercial workloads with various faulty conditions of different parts of a SAN system. By injecting network faults, controller faults, and disk faults into the SAN system, the paper observes and analyzes system availability in terms of performability (performance + availability). Two specific SAN systems are considered in this paper: iSCSI-based SAN and STICS (SCSI-To-IP Cache Storage) based SAN.
