This paper describes the application of genetic programming to synthesize a small form factor, 2 dimensional wire antenna for a 5 GHz 802.11a application. It discusses a novel approach to quantizing the search space which leads to a more simple representation. Discusses implementation details and demonstrates promising results. Many people have used evolutionary algorithms to synthesize antennas. Evolutionary algorithms are well suited to this problem domain due to the ready availability of simulators and supporting tools, the large search space, and the nature of the art of RF engineering. This fit to the problem domain can be taken a step further by representing antenna geometries with an implementation of the LOGO drawing language.
