Correlations of Size, Rate, and Duration in TCP Connections: The Case Against

PublisherUniversity of North Carolina

This paper examines rigorously the evidence for correlations among size, rate, and duration in TCP connections. The use of robust statistical methods for studying correlations is emphasized. These methods are applied to three large data sets of TCP/IP packet traces from a diverse set of networks. The major results show that correlation between size and duration is much weaker than one might expect. It was also found that correlation between size and rate is generally weak but can be strongly effected by applying thresholds to size or duration. Based on these results, no evidence found to support a hypothesis that users choose the sizes of objects to transfer based on their available bandwidth.
