This white paper considers the costs and benefits an airline should consider when planning a migration to TCP/IP and identifies the key elements of a business case for IP. A network only business case for IP may not always justify migration, the business case is usually more complex and dependent on the benefits derived from an applications strategy. Network managers are faced with demands by internal users to deliver IP solutions to support new applications. These may be browser-based applications or complex client server applications with distributed servers. This often requires upgrade of desktop infrastructure and network to support new applications and protocols. Typically the new applications and network to support them are based on the TCP/IP protocol set.
