The last few years have seen an extraordinary increase in intrusions, denial of service attacks, worms, blended threats and other attacks on computer systems. In response, companies have been forced to take a more strategic approach to network security that relies on systematically gathering, analyzing, and acting upon detailed risk and vulnerability information. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are an important weapon in the war against network attacks, but until now their use has been largely reactive. Network security professionals are so busy trying to keep up - analyzing prior attacks and putting out fires - that they rarely have the time or resources to anticipate the next attack.
