The Microsoft OEM IT Development group manages between 40 and 50 development projects annually, relying on 300 globally dispersed resources. The project management process that was set up to share, allocate resources, and set costs for individual projects was not efficient, and it was inconsistently applied. The monthly consolidation of the individual project plans into a complete project portfolio was labor-intensive and sometimes prone to inaccuracies. Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 allowed the OEM IT group to use a central repository of project plans for better collaboration, a global resource pool to easily allocate available resources, and consolidated reporting to replace their previous manual method.
