Till date many organisations have seen a mass proliferation of data extract programs and downloading of static data into Excel. This causes enormous problems, both technical and business related. The result of this process of continual download and manipulation is an ever expanding range of Excel spreadsheets. It is never clear from the Excel analysis how historical data based on numerous sources is handled. For example, what happens if the source systems are updated/restated as there is no link to the source data the end user is not alerted to the availability of refreshed data? As a result it is never clear which spreadsheet is the latest version. Most users create elaborate naming conventions to try and resolve this issue.
