The ever-increasing dependence and volume of daily business operations on telecommunication networks has heightened the need for added resiliency to withstand equipment failure, human-error, and catastrophic outages - so much so that network operators often find end customers increasingly demanding stringent service level agreements, which provide a greater degree of confidence in network survivability and availability. Furthermore, as vendors strive to continually reduce equipment cost-points and central office footprint with ultra-dense network elements, more traffic is potentially at risk when a failure does occur. To overcome this cost-driven infrastructure vulnerability and business critical reliance, network architectures must also evolve to ensure that reliability is not compromised in the ongoing quest to contain capital and operational expenditures.
