PC power management responds to the need to reduce system power consumption in support of longer battery run times and global power conservation. Inventors of early power management technologies failed to understand the importance of centralized decision-making in the power management architecture, but were successful in creating the technology foundation for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), in which power management decisions are made by the operating system.
