Many organizations have come to rely on Microsoft Exchange Server to facilitate critical business e-mail communication processes, group scheduling, and calendaring on a 24x7 basis. System failures may result in unacceptable operational and financial losses. There are several approaches to protect data and maintain data availability in the event of hardware, software, or even site failures. Backups provide a way to recover lost data from an archival medium such as disk or tape. Redundant hardware technologies also mitigate the damage caused by hardware failures. Data replication or mirroring provides a third way to ensure data availability and minimize downtime. Because of the increasing importance of Microsoft Exchange Server in the enterprise, Exchange data protection, disaster recovery, and availability are of increasing concern.
