Business Intelligence (BI) and its supporting infrastructure have undergone a significant evolution in the past 15 years. BI began as a nice-to-have strategic and tactical decision making environment, used by analysts who had little or no interaction with the day-to day Business Transaction (BTx) systems. These analysts performed trend analysis, determined patterns of behavior, carried out comparisons from one time period to another, and executed other similar forms of BI in their own isolated world, completely independent of operations. These strategic and tactical analytics have evolved to become a mandatory corporate function requiring continuous support. They are crucial to the creation and monitoring of critical strategic goals and objectives for any enterprise.
