Data Grids do demand new techniques for optimizing large distributed data volumes access and processing. At the same time, replication techniques should assure the absence of a single point of failure. Addressing the first point is possible employing complete true data-stripping techniques. An intelligent use in combination with the replica mechanism, resembling the RAID-1 scheme, and in fact replacing it for local redundancy, can solve the problem. Large Data Volumes (with typical size several Terabytes) will be processed in Data Grids. In general, the processing will require the definition of a filter, returning a given data subset. Data-mining techniques will usually operate on the result of this first filter, more or less complex, and could define additional filters.
