One of the major research universities in the United States strives to push the limits of science and needs technology that can support its efforts. Therefore, staying current with its technology - and ensuring that the technology is reliable - is important. Although it had not experienced any systemwide security breaches, the university took steps to safeguard its environment by updating to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. With initial help from Microsoft Services Premier Support, the university smoothly rolled out the update to its 1,700 workstations and portable computers over the course of one month. It takes advantage of the Windows Firewall to help protect users, even when they are off the network.
