Video Server vendors have used a variety of technologies to bring the benefits of MPEG compression and hard disk based storage to broadcast television applications. Nearly ten years ago the first video servers were introduced to the broadcast television market. At the time, the hard disk drive technology of choice was typically SCSI based and, in later years, Fibre Channel drives. During this time, disk drive capacities and performance continued to increase as major improvements in such areas as disk media and head design were brought to market by disk drive manufactures. SCSI and Fibre Channel drives have led the way with the highest capacity, performance and reliability.
